My name is Audrey, and I’m a Junior Theatre Education major at Emerson College. In September 2025, at the age of 20, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Overnight, my life was flipped upside down, and I had no idea how to navigate such a massive change.
Food quickly became one of my biggest fears. I found myself eating the same meals over and over again, afraid to try anything new because I didn’t know what my blood sugar would do. Every meal meant an insulin shot, and with that came its own physical and emotional challenges.
Everything began to change in November, when I was fortunate enough to get an insulin pump. I now wear two medical devices 24/7—a CGM that tracks my blood sugar and a pump that delivers insulin. While it took time to adjust, the pump gave me something I hadn’t felt in months: confidence.
With that confidence came freedom. I started trying new foods again. I began trusting my body. And little by little, I started trusting myself.
Every day, I grow more confident in my diagnosis, and I am endlessly grateful for my incredible medical team and my unwavering support system. Type 1 diabetes will be with me for the rest of my life—but instead of fighting it, I chose to make peace with it.
So instead of being its enemy, I became its friend.

A Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis can feel overwhelming — especially at the beginning. Beyond Type 1 focuses on helping individuals and families move forward with confidence by providing trusted education, real-life guidance, and a reminder that no one has to face this alone.
From understanding insulin and blood sugar, to mental health support and community connection, their work is about helping people thrive, not just manage.
Beyond Type 1 is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people live full, healthy lives with Type 1 Diabetes — from the moment of diagnosis and through every stage that follows.
